Advent Embodied

Jesus had skin, ate his soul food, spoke a language, and operated in his culture. If we can't picture what that looks like for a first-century Palestinian Jew or have a picture of Jesus as any other ethnicity for that matter, we run the risk of a disembodied Jesus who becomes malleable to our whims. Mary is our reminder that Jesus did, in fact, have a culture, language, skin color, and hair texture. Jesus had a mom. Jesus had a mom who told him to stop climbing the furniture, cleaned him up after he pooped, took care of him when he had a fever, taught him how to count, and dressed him for the day. Mary's motherhood reminds us that Jesus was indeed human and it is the humanity of Jesus that makes his divinity so wonderous. *Madonna and Child by David Forte
